Designing the perfect cake for your wedding day
Here is a guide to help you decide what to look for in a wedding cake.
SIZE: This is usually determined by the number of guests attending your wedding. If you are having your cake served as dessert you will need a bigger cake than if you are serving smaller portions with coffee. Always remember a square cake will serve more people than a round cake of a similar size.
THEME: This is always very individual and designing your cake to fit with your wedding theme is a great way to make the ultimate centrepiece at your reception. Whether it is a modern or traditional wedding, seaside ceremony, cocktail service or formal black tie event – the cake can designed to reflect your theme. Think about colours, patterns, decorations and styles that relate to your theme.
STYLE: There are so many choices when looking at wedding cakes. The best way to work out the styles you prefer is to collect pictures of your favourite cakes from magazines or the internet. This also gives your cake designer a really good idea of what you are after so you should get a better result.
FLAVOUR: Most cake designers offer such a large range of flavours – there’s one to suit everyone. You could choose from caramel mud, fruit cake, orange poppy, lemon coconut, chocolate mud, banana, hazelnut, carrot, white chocolate mud or vanilla cake – just to name a few! If you can’t decide on only one flavour, maybe make each tier a different flavour or order a range of cupcake flavours. Most cake designers offer cake samples which is a really helpful (and delicious) step as you need to make sure it tastes as good as it looks!
DECORATIONS: You also need to work what you would like to decorate your cake. Traditionally handmade sugar flowers are used. For a cheaper alternative you could use fresh flowers. A popular modern design is to get bride and groom characters specially made to reflect your personalities. These decorations create the finishing touches that really makes your cake unique.
